Polypropylene Copolymers
Polypropylene copolymer is a type of polypropylene (PP) that is made by polymerizing propylene with other monomers, typically ethylene. This copolymerization alters its properties, making it suitable for a broader range of applications compared to homopolymer polypropylene.
Types of Polypropylene Copolymers
- Random Copolymer: Ethylene is randomly distributed throughout the polypropylene chain. This type offers good clarity, impact resistance, and flexibility.
- Block Copolymer: Ethylene and propylene are arranged in distinct blocks. This type generally has higher toughness and can withstand stress better than homopolymers.
Characteristics
- Enhanced Toughness: Copolymers have improved impact resistance compared to homopolymers, making them suitable for applications requiring durability.
- Flexibility: Increased flexibility and lower brittleness, especially at lower temperatures.
- Good Clarity: Random copolymers can be transparent, making them ideal for packaging applications where visibility is important.
- Chemical Resistance: Like homopolymers, copolymers maintain good resistance to many chemicals.
